Pilates for Beginners in Lagos: What to Expect in Your First Class

New to Pilates? Here is exactly what happens in a beginner Pilates class in Lagos, what to bring, what to wear, and what the first few weeks actually feel like.

You do not need any experience

This is the first thing to know. Pilates is a method that meets you where you are. You do not need to be flexible, strong, or coordinated to start. You need to show up and follow the cues.

At Heat Lagos, every class is mixed level. Beginners and experienced students train together. Teachers offer modifications inside every exercise so you can work at the level that is right for you right now, and progress from there.

What happens in a Pilates class at Heat Lagos

Heat Pilates classes run for 50 minutes in an infrared-heated studio at around 30°C. The room feels warm but not oppressive. The heat loosens the muscles and supports a deeper, more connected practice.

A typical class structure:

  • Warm-up — breath work, spine mobilisation, and light activation to bring the body into the session
  • Core and stabiliser work — slow, controlled exercises that build deep abdominal and back strength without strain
  • Leg and glute series — standing and floor-based work for the lower body
  • Upper body — shoulder, arm, and back exercises using bodyweight or light props
  • Cool-down — stretching and release

You will spend most of the class on a mat. Mats are provided at the studio. Blocks and straps are available if you need them.

What to bring

You do not need much for your first Pilates class. Here is the practical list:

  • Water bottle — the heat is gentle, but you will sweat more than in a regular gym class
  • Grip socks — strongly recommended for mat Pilates. They prevent slipping and improve stability. You can buy them at the studio if you do not have a pair.
  • Comfortable workout clothes — fitted clothes work better than loose ones so the teacher can see your alignment
  • A small face towel — we have small towels available at the studio at no cost

What Pilates actually does

Most beginners come in expecting Pilates to be gentle. It is precise. That is different.

Pilates targets the deep stabiliser muscles that most gym training ignores: the transverse abdominis, the multifidus, the hip external rotators. These muscles support your spine, protect your joints, and control the quality of every movement you make. When they are weak, you compensate with bigger muscles that were not designed for that job. This is where most chronic back pain, hip pain, and shoulder tension comes from.

Pilates teaches these muscles to engage properly. The results are often felt before they are visible: your back stops hurting, your posture changes, you feel more stable walking, running, surfing, sitting at a desk.

How many classes before you notice a difference

Joseph Pilates famously said: in ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, in thirty you will have a new body.

In practice: most people notice they move better and hurt less within three to five sessions. Visible changes in posture and body composition typically take four to six weeks of consistent practice, two to three times per week.

The first two classes are usually the hardest because you are learning the language of the method. By your third or fourth class, the exercises start to make sense and the body starts to respond differently.

Pilates versus gym training

The gym builds load capacity. You get stronger by progressively lifting more. Pilates builds movement quality. You get more capable by moving with more precision, control, and range.

Both matter. Many of our members come to Pilates alongside gym training because they find it fills in gaps that lifting does not: hip mobility, shoulder stability, core control under fatigue. Surfers, runners, cyclists, and gym regulars all benefit from Pilates for this reason.

If you only do Pilates, you will build a functional, capable body. If you only lift, you may be strong but stiff and prone to injury. If you do both, you are covering most of the bases.

Pilates in an infrared-heated studio

At Heat Lagos, every class runs in an infrared-heated room. Infrared is different from traditional hot yoga heat. Instead of blasting hot air into a room, infrared panels emit radiant heat that the body absorbs directly.

The effect in a Pilates class: muscles warm up faster and reach a fuller range of motion sooner. The deep heat supports joint mobility without the suffocating atmosphere of a traditional hot room. You sweat more than you would in a cold studio, which improves how the body flushes waste and recovers.

Many people find they go deeper into exercises in the heat than they could in a cold environment. For beginners, this is particularly useful because tight hips and stiff spines are one of the main things that slow Pilates progress.

How to book your first class

The easiest way to start is our 2-week Intro Offer at €79. This gives you unlimited access to every class — Pilates, Sculpt, Yoga, Mobility, Recovery — for two weeks. It is designed specifically for new members who want to try the studio properly before committing.

Book online or come in and speak to us. If you are visiting Lagos for a shorter stay, our 7-day Vacation Week pass at €59 is the better option. Single drop-in classes are available at €22.

We are in Edificio da Fabrica da Ribeira on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, directly across from Praia de Batata. Every class is taught in English. The studio is five minutes from the centre of Lagos on foot.

Common questions from beginners

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes. All classes at Heat Lagos run on a booking system through the bsport app or website. Classes fill up, particularly in summer, so book the day before or earlier when possible.

What if I have an injury?

Tell the teacher before class. Most injuries are workable in Pilates with the right modification. Back pain, knee issues, and shoulder injuries are common, and teachers are trained to adapt exercises for them.

Is there a beginner-specific class?

All Heat Pilates classes are mixed level. There is no beginner-only class because the format does not require one — modifications are built into every exercise. If you are very new, coming fifteen minutes early and introducing yourself to the teacher is the best thing you can do.

How is mat Pilates different from reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded machine to add resistance and support. Mat Pilates uses only bodyweight and small props. Mat is harder in some ways because there is no machine providing feedback or assistance. At Heat Lagos we do mat Pilates exclusively.
